What is AI SEO?

The act of optimising a website to improve its visibility across AI search platforms such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode / Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Traditional SEO overlaps significantly with AI SEO (which is why we typically help with both), but it differs in some very key ways.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

AEO is an emerging technique that aims to get your website to be mentioned, or cited, when users ask AI platforms a question. It is typically used interchangeably with AI SEO and other jargon.

Do I need both SEO and AEO?

Yes. Google still accounts for most of the search traffic in New Zealand and ranking high on Google is a critical part of getting your business found when potential customers are ready to buy.

AI is growing rapidly and it isundoubtedly the future of search. Today, you need to do both. Luckily, AI SEO always falls under SEO for us and we recommend investing in whichever is likely to achieve the best results for you.

What platforms does AI SEO cover?

Does AI search matter? Why now?

We're living in the world of search marketing. We spend thousands of hours entwined with it. There is no doubt that AI search is the future. Even now, it is better and more efficient at researching certain things than humans are - and it's still in its infancy.

Can I just do SEO?

Absolutely! Technically, most of our clients come on board for 'just SEO'. For us, AI SEO falls under the umbrella of SEO and is part of our typical monthly retainer.

However, be wary if your agency tells you it's good enough to just keep focussing on standard SEO techniques and fundamentals. SEO has changed, and the way we do it has pivoted significantly. AI SEO is it's own category of SEO and any agency you work with should be able to tell you how they're working on it.

How is AEO different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO gets your website ranking higher on traditional search engines, typically Google. When there's a list of links where you want yours at the top.

AI search platforms are changing the world. Instead, users ask a question and get a detailed answer that cites various websites and mentions relevant brands.

AEO is aiming to get your brand mentioned in these answers. And the techniques for achieving this are slightly different.

How do I know if my content is visibile on AI?

The answer is a lot easier and, quite frankly, archaic than you might think. There are no tools on the market that can accurately measure your visibility on tools like ChatGPT. This is especially true in the small NZ market.

The truth is, running searches (prompt testing) on your platforms of choice is the best way to check.

What's the fastest way to get started with AEO

The priority at the start is technical SEO. If the AI bots (such as GPTBot, GoogleBot and PerplexityBot) can't crawl, or read, your website then they won't be able to cite you. Make sure that your code allows them and make your content as accessible as possible.
